Stanley C. Koci

Mayor

Mayor Stan Koci, Bedford High School Class of 1966, has served the Bedford community, as well as the state and country, in multiple capacities for over 40 years.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Mayor Koci studied locally at Cleveland State University for a year after high school, then joined the United States Air Force. He was honorably discharged after 4 years of service, during which time he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. He then went on to continue his education through Cuyahoga Community College’s fire training program.

Koci began a 27-year firefighting career with the Bedford Fire Department, becoming Captain in 1987 and serving many other capacities throughout his tenure. He also taught fire tech courses at Cuyahoga Community College as an adjunct instructor for 4 years.

Accolades: Graduate of the National Fire Acadamy; two-time Firefighter of the Year; board member, Northeast Ohio Fire Prevention Association, 13 years, Vice President 4 years; organizer, Chagrin/Southeast Cuyahoga County Hazardous Material Response Team; impacted state law with fire coalition that composed a portion of the Ohio Fire Code; 1994 levy that created paramedic positions in Bedford through a fire medic program.

POLITICAL POSITIONS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Aside from serving as Mayor of Bedford, Stan Koci is also Vice Chair of the First Tier Suburbs Council and holds a position on a Steering Committee of Diversity and Opportunity  Council through the National League of Cities.

He created the Art and Cultural Board in Bedford, the group behind such events as The Weekend of the Pooka and FriDates, free concerts at various spots in the city by local and national talent.

Koci served as a member of City Council for 13 years before becoming Mayor in 2013.

PERSONAL LIFE

Mayor Koci lives in Bedford with his wife Marilyn, whom he married 3 years after graduating high school, and his son and daughter. He enjoys spending time with family and is deeply committed to Bedford. He is invested in preserving and celebrating the history of the city and supports many local events, business, and organizations, including the Bedford Garden Club and the Bedford Historical Society. He can be spotted at such gatherings as Party in the Park and the many festivals that take place in Bedford throughout the year.
